Authentically German salad dressing

german salad dressing recipe

A while ago I posted a recipe for a confused German salad dressing which wasn’t too sure whether it wasn’t really Greek. I mentioned in that that real German salad dressing will use buttermilk. Buttermilk isn’t always available but it’s easily made just by adding an acid to milk (go here for the details).

My preferred acid for making buttermilk is lime juice, and this is what this recipe uses. It goes particularly well on lettuce leaves served with a sausage ring and crushed or roasted potatoes, or, if you are being particularly authentic with a Wiener Schnitzel or bratwurst.

Recipe for German salad dressing

Enough for a salad for two people (if making for a salad for four pour in the entire 300 ml/1¼ cup carton of cream and double the other ingredients).

Mix all together until the sugar has dissolved.
