8 Romantic, Not Too Soppy, Films For Valentine’s Day

It’s Valentine’s Day today, and this evening you might want to plan a special, mostly-made-with-ease-ahead, dinner. You could try the following:
Valentine’s dinner for two:
Conceived to reduce cooking time to a minimum… plenty of time for ….other things:
- cup and saucer prawn and fennel – instant in the microwave
- rhyming venison wellington with sweetheart cabbage and cranberries
- blood orange sorbet with crunchy zest biscuits
- finished with some deep orangy red mimolette cheese and black charcoal hearts
If none of those suggestions appeal, you could try looking through my post Food and How to Harness its Power in the Deliciously Slow Art of Seduction for further inspiration.
If you’re a man, once dinner is over, you may want to get your partner in the mood as it were, without having to sit through a teeth-grinding hour or so of gooey pink romance.
Here are eight, not-too-soppy films to choose from….but I’m not promising about ‘not too soppy’… other suggestions welcome.

To catch a thief | Hitchcock film with Grace Kelly and Cary Grant set in the French Riviera with an impressive diamond necklace IMDb |
||
Breakfast at Tiffany’s | Classic Audrey Hepburn, with the Moon River theme tune and another amazing necklace IMDb |
||
French kiss | Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline. Excellent score, set in France… and it’s about a necklace… IMDb |
||
The women on the sixth floor | Hen-pecked Parisian husband (yes, it does sound unlikely…) finds himself and his true love (it’s not as soppy as it sounds…). Charming, in french with subtitles IMDb |
||
A good year | Russell Crowe, Abbie Cornish, Albert Finney… Still in France, soulless banker inherits a vineyard and finds his soul…and his true love. Another excellent score. IMDb |
||
The Thomas Crown Affair | He is a rich, handsome playboy who steals a painting to alleviate the tedium of …being a rich, handsome playboy. She is an insurance investigator out to stop him. How can they both live happy ever after? You can spend an enjoyable couple of hours finding out how. The Pierce Brosnan, Rene Russo version is better than the original. IMDb |
||
Romancing the stone | Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner… more on jewels, this time in Latin America, completely ridiculous, terrific fun! IMDb |
||
The glass-bottom boat | Vintage Doris Day (warning, she’s a bit of an acquired taste), also ridiculous IMDb |
